Some time ago Powerboat ran a full test write-up of the Sterling Marine-built Camero Legend Series 11 and we were very impressed. Hayden Wheeler, Sterling's CEO, is always innovative and constantly seeking ways to improve his already fine products.
Viewing the latest version of the Legend 3 at this year's boat show, and having spoken with a couple of owners who are hugely satisfied, we thought it time to take another look at this upgraded Camero.
Now let me tell you, I didn't find fault in the way the earlier craft was constructed and finished, but Hayden decided that a redesigned dash would both enhance the looks and provide more room for stereo equipment.
He's also made some changes to the trim, and the look and finish of this latest Legend is second to none. Feedback from the skiing community resulted in a different arrangement of the side and storage pockets, and there are now even more of them.
The boat shown on these pages is powered by a 350 MAG MPI Tournament Ski MerCruiser that develops 235 kW (315 hp) and swings a 31.1 cm diameter by 35.6 cm pitch (12.25 by 14 ins) 4-blade prop topping out at 93 kph (58 mph) at 5,200 rpm. Depending on the skier's bulk, somewhere between 2,800 and 3,200 rpm should provide a speed of 56 kph (35 mph).
Throwing the Camero lock-to-lock at three-quarters throttle revealed a very tractable hull, one that inspired confidence and tracked through turns with excellent lateral stability. Taking a choppy section of river at speed revealed very comfortable and soft riding hull characteristics.
The driver's position is well set up with good sightlines and with everything falling comfortably to hand. This made the craft a pleasure to drive, a fact that is abetted by the fact that one of Hayden's goals was to produce a smooth and quiet running craft. In this tester's opinion, that goal has been very well achieved. Don't buy anything else before taking a close look at this Legend 3.
Pay no extra for velour, come in your choice of colours and velour or vinyl to suit.
